Meeting Minutes

The meeting was called to order at 6:05, after waiting for more participants to arrive. The first order of business was to review the pocket CD insert for the MTT Brochure. Jim Carroll asked about possibility of only attaching the pocket sized CD directly to the Brochure instead of making a separate insert to hold it. After much discussion, it was decided that it would be a good idea to have the separate insert with instructions on how to use the CD, since it is not the normal size and shape. Jim Carroll then asked about a specific phrase on the CD insert- "extended CD Drawer." He thought we might want to call the device a CD Tray. Mike Zavinski suggested that it be called a "CD Drive. We agreed to add the word Drive and find out from other sources whether to call it a Drawer or a Tray. Tom Dickerson will contact Jeff Wade and Brian Gallien to get their opinion on this matter.
Jim Carroll then asked about changing the web address on the MTT Brochure to the exact address of the MTT section of the York Technical College web site. We did not come to a definite conclusion on this matter because we did not have the exact location address but wanted to see if it would be too long to go on the brochure. We will discuss this matter at the next MTT Advisory Committee Meeting, which as set for Tuesday, October 14, 2003 at 12:00 noon.
The next item discussed was the changes on courses required for the MTT GT Degree. The committee reviewed both the old and new course checksheets. Tom Dickerson explained that the main differences were that 1) the required credit hours had been reduced from 77 to 68 and 2) the 12 secondary technical hours had been changed to Industrial Maintenance Technology courses. Jim Carroll asked if these 12 hours could come from some other area than IMT. Tom Dickerson explained that the 12 secondary credit hours could come from another area such as Welding, but all 12 credit hours must come from the same discipline. The committee was satisfied with the new course requirements.
The committee next discussed the local job market for MTT Graduates. Jim Carroll noted that he is seeing some improvements in the local economy, but nothing yet to indicate that the economy was about to reach levels that we saw 3 to 4 years ago. Tom Dickerson mentioned that one MTT Diploma Graduate, Buddy Crenshaw, was looking for employment. Jim Carroll stated that local companies that he had seen business increases in were INA Bearing and Duff Norton. Tom Dickerson noted that he had also seen employee needs at Baldor Electric and Tyco Electronics. This information will be passed on to Buddy Crenshaw by Tom Dickerson. Tom Dickerson also gave an update on PCC, a new machining company that is coming into the Richburg area. They will be hiring machinists in October, 2003 to staff the new facility. Tom Dickerson also reported that work is being done with Kings Electronics to upgrade CAD skills of engineering employees and with INA to upgrade machining skills of 8 to 14 female employees who work in the assembly area at INA Bearing. Both companies will be sending employees to York Technical College for courses to upgrade their skills.
Ashley Segal was going to give an update on the Co-op Program for MTT students, but that topic was postponed until next meeting due to the low attendance at the current meeting.
Jim Carroll was shown new equipment and software that was added to the MTT program since the last Advisory Committee Meeting. He was shown the new Mitutoyo CMM, the new Tinius Olsen Tension/Compression Gage, the new Sunnen hone, and he was told about the new Esprit CAD/CAM software that has been acquired. Jim felt that these additions to the program were good additions that did fill some gaps that existed in the program. Jim also suggested that some local industries might be interested in training and possible time rental of the Tension/Compression Gage. The company that he mentioned that might have the interest was Teledyne Alvac.
The committee next viewed the Mitutoyo Coordinate Measuring Machine that was purchased with grant money received from the Tyco Foundation. A very brief demonstration was given with the machine. Jim Carroll thought that this machine was a very good addition to the MTT program and should prove to be useful in working with local industry as well as for training MTT students.
Tom Dickerson next gave an update on the IMP-501 course which was a course conducted for Tyco Electronics to teach a Tyco mold maker how to product core pins on cutting edge E.D.M. (Electrical Discharge Machining) equipment that is located in IMP. The part selected for the course was the most difficult to manufacture core pin which is one in a Tyco injection mold. The project has been successfully completed and the Tyco mold maker can produce the parts to higher quality and accuracy levels than Tyco can purchase from outside sources, and at a price that is less than 1/10th of the purchase price from outside sources.
The committee next entered a discussion about the best time to conduct the meeting in order to get better attendance. Ashley Segal suggested moving the meeting time to 12:00 noon. Mike Zavinski agreed that a noon meeting time might work better, so those present agreed to do this. The committee then discussed a date for the next meeting.
The next meeting will be a 1 hour luncheon meeting on Tuesday, October 14, 2003 and it will be held in the IMP Conference Room.
Ashley Segal also suggested that another way to help increase attendance might be to add several graduates from the MTT program to the Advisory Committee. Tom Dickerson will contact several MTT graduates and add them to the committee before the October meeting.
The meeting was adjourned at approximately 6:50 p.m.
