A dental hygienist is a licensed oral health professional who provides educational, clinical, and therapeutic services supporting total health through the promotion of optimal oral health.  The hygienist is a member of the dental team who is responsible for providing treatment that helps prevent oral diseases such as dental caries and periodontal disease.

The Dental Hygiene Program is accredited by the American Dental Association, Commission on Dental Accreditation, 211 East Chicago Avenue, Chicago, Illinois 60611, (312) 440-4653 a specialized accrediting body recognized by the Council on Postsecondary Accreditation and by the United States Department of Education.  Upon completion of the program and successful completion of a written Dental Hygiene National Board Examination and a clinical Regional Board Examination, a graduate is eligible for licensure as a Registered Dental Hygienist and for certification in Infiltration Anesthesia.  The licensed dental hygienist practice in accordance with the requirements of individual state dental practice acts.
